GATE 2027 previous year question papers: official 2026 paper and answer key links, with practice questions

Search results for "GATE previous year papers" are crowded with coaching pages and "memory-based" PDFs. You do not need them to begin. The organisers publish the real question papers and the real answer keys, and the files linked below opened without a login or a payment. This article gives you the 2026 links by paper, shows how to read an answer key, explains what the revised syllabus means for older papers, and ends with eight original General Aptitude practice questions. It is written for a final-year engineering student who plans to sit GATE 2027 while placements are still running.

The Dates to Know First

GATE 2027 registration is closed. The last window, a special late-fee window, ran from 15 October 2026, 10:30 AM to 16 October 2026, 10:29 AM, and the official home page said: "Note: No further extension will be granted beyond this period." If you applied, check your form in the rectification window, which closes on 21 October 2026. The papers on this page need no registration, so they are just as useful if you missed this cycle and plan to sit a later one. For what to do in either case, read our GATE 2027 registration and fresher strategy guide.

Where the Official GATE Papers Are

The GATE 2027 website is run by IIT Madras, which its home page names as the organising institute. The page you want is the Download page. For question papers it has two parts:

  • A bulk folder. The line reads "Bulk Download of Question Papers (2007 to 2026)" and opens a Google Drive folder. PapersAdda did not open every file inside that folder, so treat it as a convenience and not as a checked list.
  • Year-wise tables with answer keys. The line reads "Year wise download of question papers with answer keys (2021 to 2026)". Each year from 2021 to 2026 has its own table with "GATE Paper" and "Answer Keys" columns. The Information Brochure also says that question papers from previous GATE exams (2007 to 2026) can be downloaded from the Downloads tab.

Three practical points before you click:

  1. The organiser changes, the website stays. The 2026 papers print "Organizing Institute: IIT Guwahati" at the bottom of each page, yet they sit on the GATE 2027 site next to every other year.
  2. File names change from year to year. 2026 uses names such as CS1.pdf and CS1_Keys.pdf. 2024 uses CS124S5.pdf and CS1FinalAnswerKey.pdf. 2025 uses CS12025.pdf and keeps its keys in a folder called 2025_Key. Click through from the page or use the tables below; do not type a guessed address.
  3. No login was needed. Every file linked in this article opened without an account.

On 15 October 2026 PapersAdda requested every link in the three tables below. Each one returned HTTP 200 and a real PDF file. They are the official files from the Download page, not copies. The first table has the papers a placement-site reader most often needs. Computer Science and Civil Engineering each have two sets in 2026, and each set has its own paper and its own key.

Two notes on the lists. First, there is no row for Robotics and Automation (RA) because RA is new for GATE 2027. Second, the Textile Engineering and Fibre Science (TF) paper in this list is a separate 2026 paper, but the Information Brochure says TF becomes part of the XE paper (as section XE9) from GATE 2027, so for 2027 the TF topics sit in section XE9. Read the XE9 syllabus PDF before you use a 2026 TF question.

How to Read a 2026 Answer Key

Each key for the ten main papers above is a two-page PDF with six columns: Q. No., Session, Question Type, Section, Key/Range and Marks. A few things you can see only by opening one:

  • MCQ answers are single letters. MSQ answers are letters joined by semicolons, such as "A;C;D" for Q19 in the CS-1 key.
  • NAT answers are ranges. The column is called Key/Range because a numeric answer is printed as a range, for example "8.90 to 9.10" for Q29 in the DA key. A whole-number answer appears as "3 to 3", as for Q32 in the CS-1 key.
  • Every key has 65 rows worth 100 marks. That is 10 General Aptitude questions and 55 subject questions, which matches the pattern on the official Question Paper Pattern page. Add up the Marks column of any key and you should reach 100.
  • Papers in the same session can share General Aptitude. In 2026 the keys for EE and CE-1 both list session 5 and the same ten GA answers, and the keys for ME and CE-2 both list session 6 and the same ten GA answers. Do not count that GA twice when you plan practice.

The mix of question types changes by paper

PapersAdda counted the question types in the Question Type column of each key. The mix is far from uniform:

2026 paperMCQMSQNAT
CS-1282413
CS-2351119
DA331418
EC421013
EE47513
ME45020
CE-131628
CE-236425
IN45614
CH39521

Each row adds up to 65. This describes the 2026 keys only and says nothing about the 2027 papers. What it does show is that the mix moves a lot, even between the two CS sets in the same year (24 MSQ in one, 11 in the other). It matters because the three types are marked differently. A wrong MCQ costs marks, a wrong NAT does not, and an MSQ gives nothing unless you pick exactly the right combination. Practise all three types and do not assume the 2026 mix will repeat.

For earlier years the Download page uses a different file name every time, so here are the CS and EC files that PapersAdda checked on 15 October 2026. Each returned HTTP 200 and a real PDF. For other branches, use the year tables on the Download page itself.

For the 2026 CS sets, see the first table above. The 2021 CS and EC question papers are mostly page images with almost no selectable text, so you cannot search them with Ctrl+F. Our GATE CSE guide and GATE CS preparation guide, both written for the 2026 cycle, cover the CS exam pattern, syllabus and a study plan; check their syllabus lists against the revised 2027 PDF below.

Electronics and Communication (EC), 2021 to 2025

For the 2026 EC paper, see the first table above. Our GATE ECE guide, written for the 2026 cycle, has EC practice questions and a study plan; check its syllabus list against the revised 2027 PDF below.

Data Science and AI (DA)

The Download page lists a DA paper from 2024 onward; the 2021 to 2023 tables have no DA row. The checked files are the 2024 paper and 2024 key for 2024, and the 2025 paper and 2025 key for 2025. The 2026 DA files are in the first table above.

What the Revised GATE 2027 Syllabus Means for Old Papers

The GATE 2027 home page says: "The syllabi for the GATE 2027 test papers have been revised. Candidates are advised to check the updated syllabi." The Information Brochure is more careful and says the syllabi "for most of the test papers" have been revised. Three other changes affect how you read old papers:

  • RA is new. Robotics and Automation (RA) is a brand-new test paper, so it has no past papers.
  • TF moves into XE. From GATE 2027 the Textile Engineering and Fibre Science paper is section XE9 of the XE paper, so its syllabus is now read as an XE section.
  • XE, XH and XL codes changed. The syllabus page has a table that maps each GATE 2026 section code to its GATE 2027 code. For example, the 2026 Humanities paper XH-C1 (Economics) is XH1 in 2027.

This article does not claim that any specific topic was added or removed. The only reliable way to know is to read your paper's 2027 PDF against the syllabus you studied before.

The official syllabus page is Test Papers and Syllabus, with one PDF per paper. The ones most readers here need: General Aptitude, CS, DA, EC, EE, ME, CE, IN, CH.

The pattern itself, from the official Question Paper Pattern page, is below. Use it to mark your own answers.

ItemGATE 2027 (official Question Paper Pattern page)

The pattern page lists the 2027 split. If you work from an older paper, compare its marks split and question types with this table before you trust its marking scheme.

How to Use Previous Year Papers for GATE 2027

1. Fix the 2027 syllabus first. Download the syllabus PDF for your paper and keep it open next to every old paper. Mark each topic as done, weak or not started.

2. Tag every old question: in, out or unsure. If a question is on a topic you cannot find in the 2027 syllabus, mark it out and do not count it in your score. If you are unsure, mark it unsure and ask a teacher or check a textbook later. Counting out-of-syllabus questions gives you a score for a paper that will not be set.

3. Run the check backwards too. Read each line of the 2027 syllabus and ask whether you have solved at least a few real questions on it. A syllabus line with no old question is not a safe line to skip. It may be one of the revised areas, and you will need a textbook or topic test for it.

4. Start with 2026 and work back. Years 2021 to 2026 have official answer keys on the site, so start there. Use the two 2026 sets of CS and CE as two separate full tests. For 2007 to 2020 the site gives question papers in the bulk folder, so solve them yourself, treat the answers as unverified until you confirm them, and check each paper's format before you trust its marking scheme.

5. Use two modes. In study mode, go topic by topic with the paper and key open, untimed. In exam mode, sit the full paper in 3 hours with 65 questions, one scribble sheet at a time, and no handheld calculator. The Information Brochure says the real test gives you a virtual scientific calculator on screen and that NAT answers are typed on a virtual keypad, so keep an on-screen scientific calculator open on your laptop while you practise. For NAT, the brochure advises rounding off only at the end of the calculation.

6. Mark yourself the official way. A wrong 1-mark MCQ costs 1/3 mark and a wrong 2-mark MCQ costs 2/3 mark. A wrong MSQ or NAT costs nothing, and an MSQ gets no credit unless your set of options is exactly right. For example, if you attempt ten 1-mark MCQs and get seven right and three wrong, you score 7 minus 3 times 1/3, which is 6 marks.

7. Keep an error log. For every question you miss, write the topic and the reason: concept gap, careless slip or time pressure. Redo the questions from the concept-gap list after a week. The log tells you what to study next far better than the raw score does.

8. Do not read a raw score as a rank. The brochure says that for papers conducted in multiple sessions, raw marks are converted to normalized marks before the GATE score is computed. A raw mark on one old set therefore cannot be turned into a rank, and marks on different sets are not directly comparable. To judge what a score can buy, see our GATE CS cutoff 2026 page.

On mock tests: the brochure says mock examination links together with the virtual calculator will be accessible through the official website. On 15 October 2026 PapersAdda did not find a mock test link on the home, Download, syllabus, pattern, dates, FAQ, eligibility or opportunities pages, so we cannot point you to one. Check the site again closer to February 2027.

8 Original General Aptitude Practice Questions

General Aptitude (GA) is common to every GATE paper, so these eight are useful whichever branch you pick. They were written by PapersAdda in the style of the GA section and were not taken from any real GATE paper. Four carry 1 mark and four carry 2 marks, for 12 marks in all. The mix is five MCQs, two NAT and one MSQ. They cover verbal, quantitative and analytical aptitude from the official GA syllabus. There is no spatial aptitude question here because a text page cannot draw shapes fairly; use the official papers for those.

Rules for self-marking: a wrong 1-mark MCQ costs 1/3 mark, a wrong 2-mark MCQ costs 2/3 mark, and there is no negative marking for NAT or MSQ. An MSQ is all or nothing. Time yourself: the real paper allows 3 hours for 100 marks, which is 1.8 minutes a mark, so this set deserves about 22 minutes.

Question 1 (1 mark, MCQ)

Neither the project manager nor the two engineers ______ told that the review had been moved to Friday.

Options:

  • (a) was
  • (b) has been
  • (c) were
  • (d) is

Solution: With "neither ... nor", the verb agrees with the subject placed nearest to it. The nearest subject is "the two engineers", which is plural, and the sentence is in the past ("had been moved"). The blank therefore needs a past plural verb. "Was" is singular, and "has been" and "is" are present tense.

Question 2 (1 mark, MCQ)

The four sentences below are in jumbled order.

  • P: During a routine inspection of the old city bridge, engineers found cracks in two supporting beams.
  • Q: It was reopened only after a load test confirmed the repairs.
  • R: As a result, the bridge was shut to traffic.
  • S: Commuters were told to use the ring road in the meantime.

Choose the option with the most logical order.

Options:

  • (a) PRSQ
  • (b) PSRQ
  • (c) RPQS
  • (d) PQRS

Solution: P introduces the bridge and the cause, so it comes first. R opens with "As a result" and reports the closure, so it follows P. S says what commuters did "in the meantime", which only makes sense while the bridge is shut, so it comes after R. Q is the reopening ("It was reopened"), so it must come last. The order is P, R, S, Q.

Question 3 (1 mark, NAT)

A shopkeeper marks an article 40% above its cost price and then allows a discount of 15% on the marked price. The shopkeeper's profit, as a percentage of the cost price, is ______ %. (The answer is an integer.)

Solution: Take the cost price as 100. The marked price is 140. After a 15% discount the selling price is 140 x 0.85 = 119. The profit is 119 - 100 = 19 on a cost of 100, which is 19%.

Question 4 (1 mark, MCQ)

Every pilot at an airline is trained in simulators. Nobody who is trained in simulators may skip a medical check. Which one of the following conclusions MUST be true?

Options:

  • (a) Some people trained in simulators are not pilots.
  • (b) Everyone who may skip a medical check is a pilot.
  • (c) Some pilots may skip a medical check.
  • (d) No pilot may skip a medical check.

Solution: Every pilot is simulator-trained, and no simulator-trained person may skip the check, so no pilot may skip it. Option (a) is not forced because all trained people could be pilots. Option (b) is not forced because the statements say nothing about people who are not simulator-trained, and some of them may skip the check without being pilots. Option (c) is false because pilots are simulator-trained and no trained person may skip.

Question 5 (2 marks, MCQ)

A factory runs three machines, M1, M2 and M3. The table gives the units each machine produced in each quarter of a year.

QuarterM1M2M3
112080100
215090110
310011090
4140100160

In which quarter did M2 contribute the largest share of that quarter's total output (all three machines together), and what was that share to the nearest whole percent?

Options:

  • (a) Quarter 1, 27%
  • (b) Quarter 3, 37%
  • (c) Quarter 3, 33%
  • (d) Quarter 4, 25%

Solution: The quarterly totals are 300, 350, 300 and 400. M2's shares are 80/300 = 26.7%, 90/350 = 25.7%, 110/300 = 36.7% and 100/400 = 25.0%. The largest is in Quarter 3, at 36.7%, which rounds to 37%.

Question 6 (2 marks, NAT)

A committee of 4 members is to be chosen from 5 men and 4 women so that it includes at least 2 women. The number of different committees that can be formed is ______. (The answer is an integer.)

Solution: Count by the number of women. Exactly 2 women: C(4,2) x C(5,2) = 6 x 10 = 60. Exactly 3 women: C(4,3) x C(5,1) = 4 x 5 = 20. Exactly 4 women: C(4,4) x C(5,0) = 1. The total is 60 + 20 + 1 = 81. Cross-check: all committees of 4 from 9 people number C(9,4) = 126, and those with fewer than 2 women number C(5,4) + 4 x C(5,3) = 5 + 40 = 45, so 126 - 45 = 81.

Question 7 (2 marks, MSQ)

In a class, every student studies at least one of Mathematics and Physics. 30 students study Mathematics, 24 study Physics and 12 study both. Which of the following statements is/are correct? (One or more options may be correct. There is no partial marking.)

Options:

  • (a) The class has 42 students.
  • (b) 18 students study only Mathematics.
  • (c) 24 students study only Physics.
  • (d) 30 students study exactly one of the two subjects.

Solution: Students studying both: 12. Mathematics only: 30 - 12 = 18. Physics only: 24 - 12 = 12. Total students: 18 + 12 + 12 = 42. Students studying exactly one subject: 18 + 12 = 30. So (a), (b) and (d) are correct. Option (c) is wrong because 24 is the number studying Physics in all, while only 12 study Physics alone.

Question 8 (2 marks, MCQ)

A university library replaced its staffed issue counter with self-service kiosks. The queue at the counter vanished within a week, and the library counted this as a success. A month later, however, the number of written complaints had doubled. Most of the complaints were not about the kiosks themselves. They were about readers being unable to find books, a problem the counter staff used to solve in passing while they stamped the slips.

Which one of the following is best supported by the passage?

Options:

  • (a) The kiosks were faulty and caused most of the complaints.
  • (b) Readers preferred long queues to self-service.
  • (c) The counter staff had been giving readers help that the kiosks did not replace.
  • (d) The library should go back to a staffed counter.

Solution: The passage says most complaints were not about the kiosks, which rules out (a). It never says readers liked queues, which rules out (b). It does not recommend any change, which rules out (d). It does say the counter staff used to solve the book-finding problem in passing, and that this problem now causes complaints, so the staff had been giving help that the kiosks did not replace.

For the real thing, the 2026 papers linked above each start with five 1-mark and five 2-mark GA questions (the Marks column of any key shows it), so you can repeat this kind of set from the official files.

WHAT PAPERSADDA THINKS

Treat old GATE papers as a mirror, not a forecast. They show you the style of the questions, the traps in the marking scheme and, most usefully, your own repeat mistakes. They cannot tell you which topic arrives in February 2027, and after a syllabus revision they tell you even less. Anyone selling you "most likely questions" is selling a guess.

For a student in placement season, our view is plain: do not let GATE become a second full-time job before your drives are done. Our off-campus drives tracker for the 2027 batch lists the drives that will compete with GATE for your time. Give old papers one fixed weekend slot, do them under exam conditions, and spend the rest of the week on what your placement tests need. The overlap is larger than people expect. GATE's General Aptitude and Engineering Mathematics sections train the same skills that company aptitude tests use, so those two sections are natural crossover practice. Once an offer is in your hand, move the weekday hours to your GATE subject papers.

We would also skip "memory-based" PDFs whenever an official paper exists. A memory-based paper is somebody's recollection of an exam; the official paper is the exam. Using the real one costs nothing and removes the risk of practising a recalled question with a wrong answer. The same goes for answer keys: the key published with the paper is the one that counts.

Finally, if PSU hiring is your reason for GATE (see our PSU recruitment through GATE guide), only your 2027 score matters. A 2026 paper is a warm-up, not a benchmark, and the brochure's normalization rule is one more reason not to read a raw practice mark as a rank.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I download GATE previous year question papers for free?

On the Download page of the official GATE 2027 website, gate2027.iitm.ac.in/download. It has a bulk folder titled "Bulk Download of Question Papers (2007 to 2026)" and year-wise tables of papers with answer keys for 2021 to 2026. The 2026 papers and keys for CS, DA, EC, EE, ME, CE, IN and CH linked in this article opened without a login on 15 October 2026.

Are there official answer keys for old GATE papers?

Yes, for 2021 to 2026. The Download page lists question papers with answer keys year by year for those six years. For 2007 to 2020 the bulk folder is described only as question papers, and the page does not say why the year-wise key tables start in 2021, so solve older papers yourself and check doubtful answers against a textbook.

Does GATE 2026 have more than one paper set for CS and Civil Engineering?

Yes. The 2026 list has CS-1 and CS-2 and also CE-1 and CE-2, each with its own question paper and its own answer key. Treat each set as a separate full test. Papers held in the same session can share General Aptitude: the keys of EE and CE-1 list the same ten GA answers, and so do ME and CE-2.

Can I use GATE 2026 papers if the GATE 2027 syllabus has been revised?

Yes, but check each question first. The GATE 2027 website says the syllabi were revised and the Information Brochure says this applies to most test papers. Download your paper's 2027 syllabus PDF, mark every old question as in, out or unsure against it, and count only the in questions when you score yourself.

Is there a past paper for the new Robotics and Automation (RA) paper?

No. The site says RA is a new test paper introduced for GATE 2027, and the 2026 list on the Download page has no RA row. RA has a Part B1 for Electrical and a Part B2 for Mechanical, so EE and ME questions may help for the matching part once you have checked them against the RA syllabus.

How do I practise GATE past papers like the real computer-based test?

Sit for 3 hours with all 65 questions (10 General Aptitude and 55 subject), use one scribble sheet at a time, and use an on-screen scientific calculator instead of a handheld one, because the real test provides a virtual scientific calculator and does not allow physical ones. Apply 1/3 and 2/3 negative marking to MCQs, none to MSQ and NAT, and no partial marks in MSQ.
