GATE 2027 registration timeline: the confirmed dates

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2027 cycle is organised by IIT Madras on behalf of the National Coordination Board-GATE, under the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India. Everything below is what the official GATE 2027 site shows as of 16 October 2026. The site has moved its registration dates several times this cycle and shows the older dates struck out, and it carries a standing note that all dates are liable to change, so recheck the portal before you act on any single date.

Registration on GOAPS, the GATE Online Application Processing System, opened on 2 September 2026, per the current official dates page. Regular registration, without the late fee, closed on 5 October 2026. The extended window, with the late fee, closed on 12 October 2026. The site then reopened registration once more, with the late fee, from 15 October 2026, 10:30 AM to 16 October 2026, 10:29 AM. Its notice said: "No further extension will be granted beyond this period." That window has now closed, so registration for GATE 2027 is over.

The late fee added Rs 500 to the application, whether you picked one paper or two. The official fee table lists, for the regular and extended periods, one paper at Rs 1,000 and Rs 1,500 and two papers at Rs 2,000 and Rs 2,500 for female, SC, ST and PwD candidates; for all other candidates it is Rs 2,000 and Rs 2,500 for one paper and Rs 4,000 and Rs 4,500 for two.

If you applied, the window that still matters is the correction window on the official dates page: application rectification opened on 14 October 2026 and closes on 21 October 2026, and the home page says it is open now. Use it to fix errors in category, paper choice or personal details you have already submitted, because after 21 October the form is locked.

City allotment, meaning which exam city you get assigned to, is scheduled for 4 January 2027. Admit card availability still shows as "TBA" on the same page, so there is no fixed date yet to plan around. The site also tells applicants not to delete the DigiLocker account they applied with, because future GATE 2027 communication will only go to that account.

Results are due on 19 March 2027. The official home page lists GATE scores as valid for 3 years, which matters more than it sounds for the strategy question below.

Does GATE 2027 actually clash with your placement season

Lay the two calendars next to each other and the apparent conflict mostly disappears. Campus placement season for a final-year 2027-batch student runs through the second half of 2026, roughly August through December, which is exactly when rolling drives like the TCS iON National Qualifier Test are active on their own multi-week cycle. GATE 2027's actual exam dates do not begin until 6 February 2027, after most first-round campus hiring for the season has already played out. The real scheduling cost is not exam day, it is the prep hours between now and February. GATE's syllabus is subject-heavy, core engineering fundamentals plus a general aptitude section, and rewards months of steady study rather than a last-minute sprint. If you registered: how hard to prepare alongside placements

Registration is done and the fee is paid, so the decision left is how many hours GATE gets between now and February. There is no single right answer, but a few patterns hold for most final-year 2027-batch students.

Reasons to prepare seriously, even if placements are going well: GATE is the only door into most PSU recruitment, a track that runs on its own timeline separate from private-sector campus placements, so if a PSU role interests you at all, even as a fallback, a good GATE 2027 score is the way in. A GATE score valid for 3 years, per the official site, buys you optionality too. You are not committing to higher studies or a PSU application today, just keeping the option live past this placement season. And if your campus offers land you a role or company you feel lukewarm about, a strong GATE score keeps a second, structurally different path open without needing to reject an offer first.

Reasons to keep GATE light: if you already hold, or are confident you will get, an offer you actually want, the prep hours are usually better spent on interview preparation for that specific company or a project. If your branch has a thin or mismatched GATE paper, not every specialisation maps cleanly onto a GATE subject code, the syllabus overlap with your coursework may be too small to justify months of separate prep. If PSU roles and postgraduate study hold no interest for you at all and your placement season is going well, sitting the paper with light revision is a reasonable middle path: you have already paid for the attempt, and the exam-day experience is useful if you decide to try again later.

If you missed GATE 2027 registration

GATE 2027 is closed to you: the official site ruled out any extension beyond 16 October 2026, 10:29 AM. Two things are still worth checking. First, if you already hold a GATE 2025 or GATE 2026 score, check whether it is still within its validity period and whether the PSU or institute you are targeting accepts it, because each recruitment notice names the GATE years it accepts. Second, the next chance is the GATE 2028 cycle, for which no dates have been announced; this cycle's portal opened on 2 September 2026 after two earlier dates were struck out, so watch the official site from mid-2027 rather than relying on a fixed date. The PSU route through GATE 2027, in brief
