IBM India band structure from 6A to 7B with employee-reported salary and promotion guide

Searches for IBM's band 6A, 6B, 7A or 7B salary run into the same wall: PapersAdda could not find this ladder anywhere on IBM's public sites, so the numbers in circulation come from employees and third-party sites. This guide lays out what those sources say, checks them against each other, and marks where they disagree. For how to read your own offer letter, see this site's IBM India salary and hike 2026 guide; this page is about the ladder, the pay reported around it, and what is reported to move you up it.

How IBM India's Band System Works

Two public sources describe IBM's bands, and neither is IBM. Levels.fyi's IBM pages list numbered levels from Band 6 upwards (Band 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10, with more above), and its software engineer table names them Associate Engineer (Band 6, entry level), Staff Engineer (Band 7), Advisory Engineer (Band 8) and Senior Engineer (Band 9).

The India-specific split into 6G, 6A, 6B, 7A and 7B comes from one career-hierarchy guide on networkinterview.com, which cites IBM's 2022 headcount and so dates from around then. It says "The entry-level is band 6G and is followed by band 6A, 6B, 7A, 7B,band 8 and then band 9," and that "Above Band 9, comes executive bands A, B, C, D, E." It also warns that "Bands may vary slightly based on country or department". PapersAdda found no second public source for the A and B sub-bands, so read them as one guide's description, not IBM policy.

Two more cautions. A band is not one job title: the guide lists several designations under a single band (for 6B it names "System Manager, Senior System Manager, etc."). And any pay range attached to a band mixes people who have just entered it with people about to leave it.

The Ladder as the Guide Describes It

BandDesignations the guide namesWhat the guide says about moving upGuide's pay range (Rs lakh a year, 2022)
6GFresher or graduate, as associates or traineesPromoted to the next band after one year of training3 to 7
6AAssociate System Engineer (ASE)Promoted after 2 to 4 years of experience4 to 8
6BSystem Manager, Senior System ManagerPromoted after 4 to 6 years of experience6 to 12
7ATech Lead (the usual joining title)Reaching it needs at least 5 years (external hire) or 7 years (IBM insider); the next promotion is "an uphill task"10 to 20
7BProject Lead, IT ArchitectReaching it needs at least 10 to 12 years of overall experienceNot given
8Senior IT Architect, Delivery ManagerPromoted to Band 9 "after getting vast experience"Above 25
9Executive IT ArchitectReaching it needs at least 15 to 20 years of overall experience25 to 40

The guide's pay ranges are four years old and come with its own warning that "The salary packages are only indicative". The next two sections show what employees report now.

What Employees Report on AmbitionBox, by Job Title

AmbitionBox (checked 28 September 2026, 2.2L salaries, refreshed 25 September 2026) reports pay against IBM job titles and never against band numbers. Only two of its titles match a band name in the guide: Associate Systems Engineer (the guide's 6A title) and Technical Lead (the guide's "Tech Lead" at 7A). The other rows below show common technical titles with no band attached, because no source links them to one.

Job title (AmbitionBox)Years coveredReportsRs lakh a yearGuide's band for this title
Associate Systems Engineer (fresher figure)Entryn/a4.1 to 4.66A

Technical Lead5 to 17 years1.7k22.7 to 25.17A (as Tech Lead)

Apart from the two fresher figures, every row spans years of tenure, so a fresher should look only at the first two rows.

What Levels.fyi Shows by Band

Levels.fyi is the only source PapersAdda found that reports IBM pay by band number from salary submissions. Its IBM software engineer page for India, last updated on 27 September 2026, gives average total compensation of ₹1.59M (about Rs 15.9 lakh) at Band 6, ₹3.3M at Band 7, ₹5.76M at Band 8 and ₹5.4M at Band 9, with a median package of ₹1.99M.

Those band averages sit far above AmbitionBox's fresher figures and above the guide's 2022 ranges. The sites draw on different pools of self-reported salaries, and Band 6 in the guide's own description spans 6G, 6A and 6B, several years of a career, so the numbers do not reconcile. Treat the gap as the finding: an IBM band number alone does not tell you the pay. Your offer letter or appraisal letter does.

How Long Each Step Typically Takes

The guide is the only source PapersAdda could fetch with per-band timelines, so every figure here carries its caveat. Trainees in 6G are promoted "After one year of training". From 6A, the guide says staff are promoted "After 2-4 years of experience", and from 6B "After 4-6 years of experience". Reaching 7A needs a "Minimum 5 years of experience" for people joining from other companies and "minimum 7 years experience" for an IBM insider, and "The promotion after this level is an uphill task." Reaching 7B needs a "Minimum 10-12 years of overall experience", and Band 9 a "Minimum 15-20 years of overall experience".

PapersAdda found no IBM page that gives a promotion month or an appraisal calendar for India, a gap this site's IBM salary and hike 2026 guide also flags for the hike cycle. Treat any circulated month or quarter as unconfirmed until your own manager or HR states it in writing.

What Speeds Up a Promotion, Only What Is Sourced

The guide says "Promotion from one band to the next typically involves performance evaluations, project leadership, technical skill growth, and contribution to business outcomes," and that "Compensation at each band includes both salary and bonus potential, with higher bands offering more significant stock options, bonuses, and leadership responsibilities."

Employee reviews add a less comfortable layer. AmbitionBox's IBM page, checked on 28 September 2026, shows 3.9 out of 5 overall from 27.5k reviews, but promotions score 3.0, the lowest of the categories on the page, below salary at 3.4. An AI/ML Engineer in Mumbai, in a review updated on 28 June 2026, calls IBM "a system driven organisation, leaning towards better relationships with manager" and writes that "your growth is determined solely by your manager." A Senior Data Engineer in Pune, in a review updated on 14 September 2026, writes that promotion and salary "became stagnant once you join" and advises negotiating as much as possible before joining. These are individual opinions, not IBM data. Read with the guide's four criteria, they suggest a practical rule: meet the formal criteria, and make sure your manager sees the work.

Your Next Move From Each Band

At 6G: the guide says trainees move to the next band after one year of training, so the first year is about completing that training well.

At 6A (Associate System Engineer): the guide's window to 6B is 2 to 4 years. Because reviewers describe growth as manager-dependent, visible ownership of a deliverable your manager can point to at rating time is the most practical way to act on the guide's "contribution to business outcomes".

At 6B: the guide's window to the next band is 4 to 6 years, and 7A carries its own floor of 7 years of experience for an IBM insider. Plan for both conditions to apply.

At 7A (Tech Lead): this is the step the guide calls "an uphill task". With promotions the lowest-rated category on AmbitionBox, budget for this stage taking longer than earlier ones, and treat a move to a different team or role as a legitimate parallel plan, not a failure.

At 7B and above: the guide puts 7B at 10 to 12 years of overall experience and Band 9 at 15 to 20 years, and says Band 8 moves to Band 9 after "vast experience". It gives no pay figure for 7B.

WHAT PAPERSADDA THINKS

The IBM band codes are famous, but almost nothing about them is published by IBM. Every specific number in this guide, from the sub-band letters to the years between them, comes from one 2022 career guide, from employees typing their pay into AmbitionBox, or from self-reported submissions on Levels.fyi, and those three sources do not agree on pay. That makes the band letters useful for orientation and the rupee figures useful only as a rough range. If a band, a designation or a promotion timeline matters to a real decision, the only number that counts is the one on your own offer or appraisal letter, and the process itself is on the official IBM careers portal. The promotions score being the lowest category on AmbitionBox is worth weighing before you plan a two-year timeline around any single figure here.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the IBM India salary for band 6A, 6B, 7A and 7B?

PapersAdda found no band-wise pay published by IBM. A 2022 career-hierarchy guide gives Rs 4 to 8 lakh a year for 6A, Rs 6 to 12 lakh for 6B and Rs 10 to 20 lakh for 7A, and no figure for 7B. On AmbitionBox, checked 28 September 2026, the matching titles report Rs 5 to 5.5 lakh for Associate Systems Engineer (0 to 4 years, the guide's 6A title) and Rs 22.7 to 25.1 lakh for Technical Lead (5 to 17 years, the guide's 7A title). Confirm your own band's pay only on your offer or appraisal letter.

What is IBM India's band system, from fresher to manager?

Levels.fyi's IBM pages list numbered bands from Band 6 upwards. One career-hierarchy guide on networkinterview.com splits the India technical ladder as Band 6G (fresher trainees), 6A (Associate System Engineer), 6B (System Manager, Senior System Manager), 7A (usually joined as Tech Lead), 7B (Project Lead, IT Architect), Band 8 (Senior IT Architect, Delivery Manager) and Band 9 (Executive IT Architect), with executive bands A to E above. IBM itself does not publish this ladder on any page PapersAdda found.

How long does it typically take to get promoted at IBM India?

The same guide says trainees move up from 6G after one year of training, 6A staff are promoted after 2 to 4 years of experience and 6B staff after 4 to 6 years. Reaching 7A needs at least 5 years of experience for an external hire or 7 years for an IBM insider, and the guide calls the promotion after 7A an uphill task. These are one third-party guide's figures, not IBM timelines.

What speeds up a promotion at IBM India?

The guide names performance evaluations, project leadership, technical skill growth and contribution to business outcomes. On AmbitionBox, checked 28 September 2026, IBM employees give promotions 3.0 out of 5, the lowest of the category scores, below salary at 3.4, and one reviewer writes that growth is determined solely by your manager.

Does IBM India have a fixed annual hike or promotion date?

PapersAdda found no IBM page that gives a promotion month or an appraisal calendar for India, and this site's IBM salary and hike 2026 guide flags the same gap for the hike cycle. Treat any circulated month or quarter as unconfirmed until your manager or HR states it in writing.

What is the entry-level salary for an IBM India Associate Systems Engineer?

AmbitionBox shows a fresher Associate Systems Engineer at Rs 4.1 to 4.6 lakh a year, and Rs 5 to 5.5 lakh across the title's 0 to 4 year range (checked 28 September 2026). The 2022 guide puts the 6A band, which it links to this title, at Rs 4 to 8 lakh. Neither is an IBM figure.
