Cognizant Fresher Salary In-Hand 2026: GenC Monthly Pay
Cognizant GenC, GenC Pro and GenC Next in-hand pay for 2026, worked month by month with FY 2026-27 income tax, the new PF ceiling and professional tax.

Does being a man or a woman change your professional tax if Cognizant posts you to Pune? Maharashtra's rule technically says yes. This guide settles that first, then moves through every tier and every deduction, with the government source behind each figure.
Cognizant's Fresher Tiers, and the One That Cannot Be Priced
Candidate reports describe four Cognizant fresher tiers, and only three have a band worth quoting:
| Tier | Candidate-reported CTC | Can this guide quote a band? |
|---|---|---|
| GenC (Programmer Analyst Trainee) | Rs 4.0-4.5 lakh | Yes |
| GenC Pro | Rs 5.5-6.5 lakh | Yes |
| GenC Next | Rs 6.5-7.0 lakh | Yes |
| GenC Elevate | Not consistently reported | No |
As an employee-reported cross-check, AmbitionBox's auto-generated fresher figure for a Programmer Analyst Trainee at Cognizant, checked on 28 September 2026, sits close to the GenC band. GenC Elevate is the outlier: independent reports on it disagree so widely that quoting any single number would invent precision that does not exist. Cognizant does not publish a CTC by track on its careers portal for any of these tiers, so every figure here is a candidate-reported planning estimate, not an official Cognizant number.
The Pune Question: Does Gender Change Your Take-Home?
Maharashtra's professional tax schedule, in force from 1 April 2023, sets separate monthly-salary thresholds for men and women: men start paying once their monthly salary exceeds Rs 10,000, women only once it exceeds Rs 25,000. On paper, that looks like it could matter to a Cognizant fresher posted to Pune.
In practice, it does not, because every Cognizant fresher tier in this guide pays well above Rs 25,000 a month in gross fixed pay, clearing both thresholds. Above Rs 25,000 a month, Maharashtra charges the same Rs 2,500 a year, split as Rs 200 a month for eleven months and Rs 300 in February, regardless of gender. The rule only creates a real difference for salaries between Rs 7,500 and Rs 25,000 a month, a band no Cognizant fresher tier here falls into.
Step by Step: GenC Pro at Rs 6.5 Lakh CTC
GenC Pro's upper figure is also the point where GenC Pro's band meets GenC Next's, so one walk-through covers both. Cognizant does not publish a component-wise breakup, so this guide assumes basic pay is 50% of CTC. That is a labelled assumption, chosen because India's Code on Social Security, 2020 (in force since 21 November 2025) adds back into "wages" any excluded allowances that go above one-half of total pay. The model counts the CTC as fixed pay plus the employer's PF share; gratuity is covered further down.
| Step | Amount |
|---|---|
| Annual CTC | Rs 6,50,000 |
| Assumed basic pay (50% of CTC), monthly | Rs 27,083 |
| Employer PF (12% of basic), monthly, a CTC cost, not paid to you | Rs 3,250 |
| Monthly gross fixed pay (CTC minus employer PF, divided by 12) | Rs 50,917 |
| Less: employee PF (12% of full basic) | - Rs 3,250 |
| Less: professional tax (Rs 300 in February in Karnataka and Maharashtra) | - Rs 200 |
| Less: income tax | - Rs 0 |
| Monthly in-hand | about Rs 47,467 |
The assumed basic here, Rs 27,083, is above the new Rs 25,000 PF ceiling, which is why this is one of the two points where your employer's PF choice matters. The ceiling section below works through it.
Why Income Tax Comes Out at Zero for Every Tier
Under the new regime in the Income-tax Act, 2025, three rules decide the answer: a standard deduction of Rs 75,000 from salary (section 19), nil tax on the first Rs 4,00,000 of taxable income and 5% from Rs 4,00,001 to Rs 8,00,000 (section 202), and a rebate that cancels the tax, up to Rs 60,000, when taxable income is no more than Rs 12 lakh (section 156). Professional tax cannot be deducted under this regime. Salary below is the monthly fixed pay times 12, since the employer's PF share is not paid to you.
| Tier point | Salary for the year | Less standard deduction | Taxable income | Tax at slab rates | Tax after section 156 rebate |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| GenC, Rs 4.0 lakh | Rs 3,76,000 | Rs 75,000 | Rs 3,01,000 | Rs 0 (nil slab) | Rs 0 |
| GenC, Rs 4.5 lakh | Rs 4,23,000 | Rs 75,000 | Rs 3,48,000 | Rs 0 (nil slab) | Rs 0 |
| GenC Pro, Rs 5.5 lakh | Rs 5,17,000 | Rs 75,000 | Rs 4,42,000 | Rs 2,100 | Rs 0 |
| GenC Pro / GenC Next, Rs 6.5 lakh | Rs 6,11,000 | Rs 75,000 | Rs 5,36,000 | Rs 6,800 | Rs 0 |
| GenC Next, Rs 7.0 lakh | Rs 6,58,000 | Rs 75,000 | Rs 5,83,000 | Rs 9,150 | Rs 0 |
If your employer restricts PF to the ceiling at the two top points, salary rises slightly (to about Rs 6,14,000 and Rs 6,64,000) and slab tax to Rs 6,950 and Rs 9,450, still fully covered by the rebate. So no TDS should appear on a GenC, GenC Pro or GenC Next payslip under the new regime.
Every Tier, Every State: The Full Table
Karnataka and Maharashtra both charge Rs 200 a month and Rs 300 in February once pay clears their thresholds (Rs 25,000 a month in Karnataka); Telangana charges Rs 200 every month above Rs 20,000. So a normal month is identical in all three states, and February is Rs 100 lower in Karnataka and Maharashtra. PF below is 12% of the full assumed basic.
| Tier | CTC | Monthly gross fixed | Employee PF | In-hand, normal month | February, Karnataka and Maharashtra |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| GenC, low | Rs 4.0 lakh | Rs 31,333 | Rs 2,000 | Rs 29,133 | Rs 29,033 |
| GenC, high | Rs 4.5 lakh | Rs 35,250 | Rs 2,250 | Rs 32,800 | Rs 32,700 |
| GenC Pro, low | Rs 5.5 lakh | Rs 43,083 | Rs 2,750 | Rs 40,133 | Rs 40,033 |
| GenC Pro / GenC Next, shared point | Rs 6.5 lakh | Rs 50,917 | Rs 3,250 | Rs 47,467 | Rs 47,367 |
| GenC Next, high | Rs 7.0 lakh | Rs 54,833 | Rs 3,500 | Rs 51,133 | Rs 51,033 |
The PF Ceiling Now Matters Only at the Top Two Points
Until 16 September 2026 the ceiling was Rs 15,000 a month, below the assumed basic at every Cognizant tier. From 17 September 2026 it is Rs 25,000 (the Union Cabinet approved the rise on 16 September 2026). EPFO's FAQ on the change says contributions on wages below Rs 25,000 are worked out on the actual wages, while above it the statutory contribution "may generally be restricted to the prescribed ceiling". On this guide's assumptions only the Rs 6.5 lakh and Rs 7.0 lakh points have a basic above Rs 25,000:
| Tier point | Assumed basic | Employee PF, full basic | Employee PF, restricted to Rs 25,000 | In-hand, full basic | In-hand, restricted |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| GenC, Rs 4.0-4.5 lakh | Rs 16,667-18,750 | Rs 2,000-2,250 | Not applicable | Rs 29,133-32,800 | Same |
| GenC Pro, Rs 5.5 lakh | Rs 22,917 | Rs 2,750 | Not applicable | Rs 40,133 | Same |
| GenC Pro / Next, Rs 6.5 lakh | Rs 27,083 | Rs 3,250 | Rs 3,000 | Rs 47,467 | Rs 47,967 |
| GenC Next, Rs 7.0 lakh | Rs 29,167 | Rs 3,500 | Rs 3,000 | Rs 51,133 | Rs 52,133 |
The restricted column gains twice the PF difference because, in this model, the employer's share is restricted too and the same CTC is then paid out as fixed pay. Whether a real offer works that way is between you and the employer: EPFO's FAQ describes CTC as an arrangement between the two and not a statutory concept for PF. Restricting PF means more cash now; full-basic PF means more in your own PF account, which the employer matches.
Which Parts of the CTC Reach Your Bank Every Month
Cognizant does not publish a component-wise breakup for any fresher tier, so this is how the pieces behave in general, not a Cognizant-specific disclosure:
- Basic pay and fixed allowances show up in your account every month; that is the "monthly gross fixed" column above.
- The employer's PF share goes into your PF account, not your bank account.
- Gratuity, if your CTC counts it, is paid only when you leave after five years of continuous service (the five-year condition does not apply on death, disablement or the end of a fixed-term contract). The rate is 15 days' wages for each completed year, with a month's wages divided by 26. On this guide's assumption that is roughly Rs 800 a month of CTC at Rs 4.0 lakh, rising to about Rs 1,400 at Rs 7.0 lakh; if it sits inside your CTC, your monthly credit will be lower than the tables by about that much.
- Performance-linked variable pay, where a role includes it, is paid on the cycle your offer letter states. Do not divide it by twelve and count it as guaranteed monthly income.
Before You Sign: What to Confirm in Writing
- Exact tier and title on the offer, since GenC, GenC Pro, GenC Next and GenC Elevate are different offers with different pay pictures, and this guide only prices three of them.
- Posting city and state, which decides your actual professional tax line.
- Provident fund basis, which matters only if your basic pay is above Rs 25,000 a month: full basic, or restricted to the ceiling.
- Whether gratuity or insurance sits inside the CTC, since neither reaches your monthly credit.
- Fixed-versus-variable breakup, so you know which rupees are guaranteed every month and which are not.
WHAT PAPERSADDA THINKS
The number worth remembering is that income tax drops out for every tier this guide could responsibly price, GenC through GenC Next, under the FY 2026-27 rules, though from GenC Pro upward it takes the Rs 12 lakh rebate to get there. The PF question has changed shape with the new Rs 25,000 ceiling: it no longer arises at GenC or GenC Pro pay, and at the top of GenC Next it is worth up to about Rs 1,000 a month in this model. What deserves more attention now is the part of the CTC that never reaches your bank, gratuity, insurance and variable pay, because that is where two offers with the same headline can differ by more than a thousand rupees a month.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Cognizant GenC in-hand salary per month in 2026?
On a candidate-reported GenC CTC of Rs 4.0-4.5 lakh, monthly in-hand works out to about Rs 29,133 to Rs 32,800 after 12% employee PF and Rs 200 professional tax, with zero income tax under the FY 2026-27 new regime. In Karnataka and Maharashtra, February is Rs 100 lower. On this guide's assumption of basic pay at half of CTC, the Rs 25,000 PF ceiling does not apply at GenC pay.
What does Cognizant GenC Pro pay in hand per month?
GenC Pro is candidate-reported at Rs 5.5-6.5 lakh CTC, which works out to about Rs 40,133 to Rs 47,467 a month in hand, or about Rs 47,967 at Rs 6.5 lakh if your employer restricts PF to the Rs 25,000 ceiling. Income tax is zero because the section 156 rebate wipes out the Rs 2,100 to Rs 6,950 a year that the slabs would otherwise charge.
Does a woman at Cognizant in Pune pay more or less professional tax than a man?
The same. Maharashtra's schedule starts charging men above Rs 10,000 a month and women above Rs 25,000, but every GenC, GenC Pro and GenC Next salary in this guide clears both, so everyone pays Rs 2,500 a year: Rs 200 a month and Rs 300 in February.
Is GenC Elevate pay higher or lower than GenC Pro?
It cannot be answered reliably. Independent salary reports for GenC Elevate disagree too widely for any band to be trustworthy, and Cognizant does not publish a figure. Confirm the number on your own offer letter rather than assuming it sits above or below GenC Pro.
Does Cognizant deduct provident fund on my full basic pay?
Below Rs 25,000 a month of basic, the full 12% applies: the statutory ceiling rose to Rs 25,000 on 17 September 2026, and EPFO says contributions below it are worked out on actual wages. On this guide's assumptions that covers GenC and GenC Pro. At Rs 6.5-7.0 lakh CTC the assumed basic is above Rs 25,000, so an employer may restrict PF to Rs 3,000 a month, which in this model raises in-hand by about Rs 500 to Rs 1,000 a month. Ask HR which basis applies.
Where can I read the actual CTC Cognizant is offering me?
Only your own signed offer letter and the specific role posting you applied to. Cognizant publishes no CTC figure by track on its careers portal, so a page, forum post or aggregator average, including the ones on this site, is a planning estimate, not your number.
Which parts of a Cognizant CTC show up in my monthly bank credit?
Fixed basic pay and allowances land every month. The employer's PF share goes to your PF account, not your bank. Gratuity, if the offer counts it inside the CTC, is paid only when you leave after five years of continuous service, and variable pay follows the cycle your offer letter states. Cognizant does not publish its own breakup, so check the split on your offer letter.
