AICTE Internship Portal 2026: How It Works

The AICTE National Internship Portal 2026: who runs it, how to apply, stipend rules, AICTE credit norms, spotting scams, and how it differs from PMIS.

Student checking internship listings on the AICTE National Internship Portal dashboard

PapersAdda is an independent site and is not run by, affiliated with, or endorsed by AICTE or the Government of India. Everything below is either what the portal's own public pages state, or what AICTE's own published policy document states; always complete any actual application on the official domain, internship.aicte-india.org, and never on a copy of it.

What the AICTE Internship Portal Actually Is

The portal describes itself, on its own homepage, as the "National Internship Portal by AICTE, Ministry of Education, Government of India," built "for AICTE, UGC, IGNOU and other students." AICTE itself, the All India Council for Technical Education, lists the Internship Portal as one of its own initiatives on its main site, aicte-india.org, alongside programmes like Smart India Hackathon and the National Education Alliance for Technology.

It works as a single listings marketplace, not a portal for one employer. As checked on 28 September 2026, the homepage counter read 79,57,193+ internships and 83,170 companies, against the stated national goal of 1 crore internships by 2027. On that date, listings on the portal spanned government missions (the Indian Army's Tech and Cyber Cadre, MoHUA's TULIP Urban Learning Internship Programme, the National Highways Authority of India, C-DAC, the Ministry of Rural Development's PRATIBHA programme, and state portals such as the Government of Maharashtra's) alongside corporate and skilling partners (Google, Microsoft, Cisco Networking Academy, MongoDB, Salesforce, Autodesk, and NASSCOM's FutureSkills Prime, among others).

Completion is meant to be independently checkable: the portal states that a finished internship earns a government-issued, QR-verifiable certificate, and scanning that code opens the portal's own verification page showing the issuing ministry, the host organisation and the exact internship period, rather than asking anyone to take a printed certificate on trust.

Who Can Use It

By the portal's own description, it is built for students of AICTE, UGC and IGNOU-affiliated institutions, not restricted to one type of college or one branch. Its own "streams" section lists engineering branches (computer science, AI and data science, electronics, mechanical and aerospace, civil, chemical, electrical) alongside non-engineering streams such as biotechnology, agriculture, pharmacy, management, law and mass communication.

PapersAdda could not find a single, universal minimum-year eligibility rule stated on the portal's visible homepage; instead, the portal describes an AI matcher that scores every live opening against a student's own branch, year, city and skills once a profile is created, and only surfaces what that student can realistically apply for. If you are unsure whether your year of study qualifies for a specific listing, the practical path is to create a free profile and let the matching tool show you what is actually open, rather than assuming you are excluded before checking.

Separately, AICTE's own Internship Policy document ties a mandatory internship credit requirement to students in its approved B.Tech and three-year diploma programmes specifically, covered in detail below.

How to Apply: The Portal's Own Five Steps

The portal describes its own process as five milestones, and states plainly that it involves no agents and no fees:

  1. Sign up (about 4 minutes): create a profile, with your college auto-filled from the AICTE or AISHE database, and your skills entered in your own words.
  2. Get matched (instant): the portal's AI matcher scores every live opening against your branch, year, city and skills, so you mainly see listings you can realistically get.
  3. Apply (one tap): a single profile applies to any ministry or corporate listing on the portal, with every application tracked from your own dashboard.
  4. Get paid (monthly): employers respond inside the portal, and stipends are declared upfront on each listing and paid to your bank account rather than discussed over chat or DM.
  5. Get certified: on completion, you receive the QR-verifiable government certificate, and credits are deposited into your Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) account against your APAAR or ABC ID.

Stipend: Only What Each Listing Posts

The portal does not publish one blanket stipend figure, because pay varies by ministry, company, role, city and duration. What it does state as policy is that stipends are declared upfront on each listing and paid directly to the intern's bank account, and that registration, applying, shortlisting and the completion certificate cost a student nothing. Listings on the portal also come in three durations: weekly (1 to 4 weeks), monthly (1 to 6 months), and semester-length (6 months or more), so compare stipend against duration on the specific listing rather than assuming a standard monthly rate applies across the board. For company-wise stipend ranges outside this portal, PapersAdda's own IT internship stipend guide tracks reported figures by employer.

AICTE's Own Rule on Internships Inside Approved Programmes

Separate from the portal's job-board function, AICTE has a standing academic policy on internships as part of the approved technical education curriculum. Its own "AICTE Internship Policy: Guidelines and Procedures" document, published on AICTE's website, sets out a credit framework in Chapter 2: "a minimum of 14-20 credits of Internship/ Entrepreneurial activities / Project work/ Seminar and Inter/ Intra Institutional Training may be counted toward B. Tech. degree programme and 10-14 credits for three-year diploma programme." The same chapter fixes what one credit is worth: "1 credit is equivalent to minimum 40-45 hours of work," expects a full-time intern to spend 40 to 45 hours a week on it, and says this adds up to "about 600 to 700 hours of total internship duration for B. Tech and 450-500 hours for diploma." One inconsistency is worth knowing: the credit table in the same chapter prints "(Diploma) 10-16" against the prose rule of 10 to 14, so check your own board's curriculum for the diploma figure it applies.

In plain terms: if you are in an AICTE-approved B.Tech or three-year diploma programme, your institute's model curriculum is built to expect a substantial internship, entrepreneurial project, or equivalent industrial training, credited at those hour-per-credit rates, and your college's own Training and Placement Cell administers how that gets logged against your degree. An internship you find and complete through the National Internship Portal can count toward this requirement, but whether it actually does depends on your own institute signing off on it, not on the portal automatically.

How to Spot a Fake Internship

The portal answers this directly for its own listings: applying through internship.aicte-india.org costs a student nothing at any stage, registration, application, shortlisting or the completion certificate. If any website, agent or self-styled "placement consultant" asks you to pay a fee to apply through the National Internship Portal, that is fraud. The portal's own contact for reporting it is [email protected].

A few habits carry over to any internship listing, on this portal or elsewhere: check the address bar reads internship.aicte-india.org and not a lookalike domain before entering any personal details; never share your login password or a one-time password with anyone claiming to be a recruiter or portal admin, whether on a call or in a chat; treat a stipend "negotiated" in a chat message rather than declared on the listing itself as a red flag, since the portal states stipends are declared upfront and "never negotiated in DMs"; and verify a completion certificate through the portal's own QR scan rather than accepting a PDF forwarded over email. If in doubt, contact AICTE's own helpline, 011-29581423 (Monday to Friday, 9 am to 6 pm IST) or email [email protected], which the portal states replies within 48 hours.

How This Differs From the PM Internship Scheme

The Prime Minister Internship Scheme (PMIS) is a separate initiative, run by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, not AICTE or the Ministry of Education. A Press Information Bureau release of 22 April 2026 states interns "will receive minimum financial assistance of Rs 9,000 per month," and that more than 300 companies had participated in the pilot phase as of that release. Eligibility runs 18 to 25 years old, and that same release widened it to final-year undergraduate and postgraduate students, provided they submit a No Objection Certificate from their own institution confirming the internship will not interfere with their academic requirements. PMIS applications go through its own portal at pminternship.mca.gov.in, separate from AICTE's National Internship Portal.

The practical difference: AICTE's portal is Ministry of Education-run, spans government and corporate listings of every duration, and ties completion to your Academic Bank of Credits account; PMIS is a Ministry of Corporate Affairs scheme with one scheme-wide minimum monthly payment at its partner companies. The two are not mutually exclusive, a student can be eligible for and use either, or both, since they run on different portals with different rules.

WHAT PAPERSADDA THINKS

This is one of the better-built pieces of government digital infrastructure aimed at students in recent years: an AI matcher instead of a static PDF list, a QR-verifiable certificate instead of a photocopy anyone could fake, and a real credit link into the Academic Bank of Credits rather than a certificate that goes straight into a drawer. Our honest caution is on the credit side specifically: an internship found through the portal does not automatically satisfy your AICTE-mandated credit requirement just because you completed it, that still runs through your own institute's Training and Placement Cell and its paperwork. Treat the portal as a genuinely useful place to find a verified internship, but confirm with your own department, before you start, that the specific listing you pick will actually be accepted against your degree's credit requirement.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the AICTE Internship Portal?

It is the National Internship Portal built by AICTE (the All India Council for Technical Education) under India's Ministry of Education, at internship.aicte-india.org. It lists internships from government missions and corporate partners for students from AICTE, UGC, IGNOU and other institutions, and is separate from any single employer's own careers page.

Is the AICTE Internship Portal free to use?

Yes. The portal states that registration, applying, shortlisting and the completion certificate cost a student nothing, funded by AICTE under the Ministry of Education. Anyone asking you to pay a fee to apply through it is committing fraud; report it to [email protected].

How do I apply through the AICTE Internship Portal?

Create a profile (the portal auto-fills your college from the AICTE or AISHE database), let its AI matcher score live openings against your branch, year, city and skills, then apply with one tap from a single profile. Stipends are declared upfront on each listing and paid to your bank account, and a QR-verifiable certificate with Academic Bank of Credits credits follows completion.

Does the AICTE Internship Portal pay a fixed stipend?

No, the portal does not publish one blanket stipend figure. Each listing declares its own stipend upfront, and durations vary from weekly (1 to 4 weeks) to monthly (1 to 6 months) to semester-length (6 months or more), so the amount depends on the specific host and role.

Does an internship count toward my AICTE-mandated credits automatically?

Not automatically. AICTE's own Internship Policy sets a credit framework, 14 to 20 credits for a B.Tech and 10 to 14 credits for a three-year diploma, at a minimum of 40 to 45 hours of work per credit, for approved programmes. Whether a specific internship counts against that requirement is confirmed by your own institute's Training and Placement Cell, not decided by the portal itself.

How is the AICTE Internship Portal different from the PM Internship Scheme?

They are run by different ministries. The AICTE portal is a Ministry of Education initiative covering government and corporate listings of varying stipend and duration. The PM Internship Scheme is a Ministry of Corporate Affairs scheme that pays a minimum of Rs 9,000 a month, for ages 18 to 25, through its own separate portal, pminternship.mca.gov.in.

How do I know an internship listing is genuine and not a scam?

Confirm you are on internship.aicte-india.org itself, never a lookalike domain, and remember that applying is always free, no fee, no deposit, no registration charge. Never share your password or OTP with anyone claiming to represent a listed employer, verify any completion certificate through the portal's own QR scan, and report suspicious listings to [email protected] or the helpline at 011-29581423.
